Guide Description

ENGLISH VERSION
Lucca was founded near the river Serchio in Etruscan and Roman periods. The first inhabitants probably were from Liguria and, in fact, the name seems to have origins from the Celtic-Ligurian word “Luk” with the meaning of “marshy place”; for others Lucca comes from the root of “Luk”, i.e. “light” a reference to a bay in the vegetation.
The signs of Lucca as a Latin colony (in 180 BC) are the architectural peculiarities such as the Amphitheatre, the “Forum” in Piazza San Michele and the urban layout of the streets of the old city centre.
Also the famous walls which defended the city against attacks from the north are dated back to the Roman period. In 56 BC Lucca was the site of the important meeting between Caesar, Pompeo and Crassus to renew the terms of the First Triumvirate.
